A teenage boy has been arrested in connection to the death of a 14-year-old girl in downtown Winnipeg.

On Dec. 15, at around 1 p.m., police say a 14-year-old girl was with a group of two females and a male, all known to her. The trio got into a verbal argument, and the male pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times before fleeing.

Officers quickly arrived at the scene on Graham Avenue and Fort Street and provided emergency medical care until paramedics arrived. The young girl was transported to hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery. However, she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

Police released details about the suspect Monday morning, and later that same day, the suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested in the area of Provencher Boulevard and Des Meurons Street.

He has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder and detained in custody.
