Two people are in hospital following a serious fire early Wednesday morning.

The blaze broke out just after 3:30 a.m. in a two-storey townhouse complex in the 800 block of Keewatin Street.

The fire was well-involved when crews arrived, and several people had to be rescued from their suites.

Two people were transported to hospital in critical condition.

A Winnipeg Transit bus was brought to the scene to provide shelter for residents, while the City of Winnipeg's Emergency Social Services team was deployed to help displaced residents find temporary housing.

It took about an hour to get the fire under control. There is no word on a cause.

Fire officials continue to investigate.
