A 19-year-old man is in custody following a serious assault in downtown Winnipeg.

At around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of a stabbing in the 600 block of Portage Avenue.

When they arrived, they located a 34-year-old man with serious injuries to his upper body requiring immediate emergency first aid. He was transported to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Police say the victim and another male unknown to him became involved in a physical altercation. The suspect then pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the upper body. He then walked away while the victim collapsed and was assisted by a passerby.

On Monday, officers arrested a 19-year-old man and charged him with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.

He remains in custody.
