Winnipeg police made a shocking discovery early Wednesday morning while responding to a well-being check at a home in Richmond West.
Inside, officers located 68 dogs living in inhumane conditions.
"This is the largest event like this in known history with Animal Services, " said Leland Gordon, general manager of the city's Animal Services.
Officers with Animal Services attended the scene and helped rescue the dogs. Many of them were puppies with matted fur and various other health issues.
The dogs, now in the care of The Winnipeg Humane Society, will remain there and get the care they need.
"The cost of care for these animals is estimated at up to $150,000," said the Winnipeg Humane Society. "This is a heartbreaking case, and we’re working tirelessly with Winnipeg Animal Services to care for the dogs coming in, on top of being full."

"Donations are the best way you can help these dogs, who are so sweet and friendly, in spite of their state," said the Winnipeg Humane Society.
Winnipeg police are investigating, and no charges are pending at this time.
