The weather outside may not be frightful, but the music will certainly be delightful at an upcoming winter-themed show.

Flipside Opera and Art Song Collective embraces the cold and celebrates the many moods of the typically chillier months in “Winter Words.”

“Nordic composers were really the germ for this concert,” explains Flipside’s Judith Oatway, who performs in the concert.

From there, the theme grew to encompass ideas and emotions that one associates with wintery, northern weather.

Joining Oatway on the program will be fellow Flipside Opera and Art Song Collective member Lisa Rumpel at the piano, plus cellist Leanne Zacharias and choral all-star collaborators Proximus 5.

“They’ve got a really interesting program planned,” says Rumpel. “Everything from early chant arrangements to recent pop arrangements.”

The eclectic program also features Canadian folk ballad selections, plus music by Argento, Bonds, Gjeilo, Powell, Previn, Strauss, Sibelius and more.

Taking place at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg (603 Wellington Crescent), the concert begins at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 3.

Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door.

In what has become typical Flipside fashion, the concert also features snacks and other treats – including a “hot chocolate bar” allowing audience members to craft a custom, cozy creation to sip on.
