Parts of Manitoba could be in for a real taste of winter weather over the next 48 hours, with conditions changing quickly and snow piling up in some regions.

Environment Canada (EC) says that "an Alberta clipper will bring rapidly changing weather conditions with strong winds, rain changing to snow, and quickly falling temperatures for parts of western Manitoba Sunday."

The clipper is expected to begin as rain showers for western Manitoba Saturday evening along an advancing cold front. "Behind this cold front temperatures will fall below the freezing mark and snow will begin to move in from Saskatchewan overnight into Sunday morning. Strong winds will also accompany the snow causing reduced visibility," a special weather statement from EC says.

"Hazardous travel conditions are forecast to begin Sunday morning and last through the day Sunday. Icy conditions will also develop as temperatures drop below the zero degree mark, causing wet surfaces to freeze by Sunday morning.

"Snow and winds will begin to taper off Sunday evening, but expect poor travel conditions to last into Monday."

Snowfall warnings

Areas further north can expect to see up to 20 centimetres of snow, EC says. The notional weather forecaster has issued a snowfall warning for areas including The Pas and Flin Flon.

"The heaviest snow will begin Saturday evening and last into the overnight hours. Heavy snowfall will begin to taper off Sunday morning," the warnings say.

EC is warning residents to be prepared for poor travel conditions, including visibility being quickly reduced.
