A school supply collection is already underway to help kids in need get ready for the new school year.

"We are collecting some essentials for back to school like backpacks, lunch bags, water bottles, and shoes," says Chelsea Hewitt, the Supervisor of Programs and Services with Family Dynamics Inc. in Winnipeg.

There are eight locations in Winnipeg where people can drop off these items, including in the Maples, Tuxedo, Westgrove, Transcona, Elm Wood, North Kildonan, in Portage Place downtown and St. Vital.

"We're hoping to distribute in mid-August before caregivers start going out and try to purchase themselves."

Family Resource Centres are located in Manitoba Housing properties.

"The tenants who live within those communities are those we serve. Low-income communities, undersupported families and that's who's going to benefit the most."

New items for school help boost students' confidence as they start school, according to Hewitt.

"We gladly accept any cash donations and go purchase the items ourselves. We can pick up if a workplace wants to do a little drive within their staff and we would gladly come and pick it up."

Locations can be found on the Family Dynamics website as well as Hewitt's phone number and email.
