If you plan on celebrating Canada's birthday with a few fireworks, make sure you're doing it safely.

Janet Bier, the director of Fire Prevention with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, says only people 18 and older are allowed to handle fireworks.

Bier reminds people that you need a permit to set of fireworks, and you need written permission from neighbours if a building or structure is within 30 metres of your firing base (a distance she says most residents of Winnipeg probably don't have on their property). She also says you should light fireworks at arms-length, and it's best to have an igniter's stick.

This Saturday marks Canada's 150th birthday.
