Bitterly cold temperatures aren't expected to leave Winnipeg and the surrounding area any time soon.

Environment Canada says an arctic ridge of high pressure will continue to build through the Canadian prairies throughout the weekend.

Overnight low temperatures could approach -30 C and a strengthening northwest wind will bring extreme wind chills of -40 C or colder tonight and possibly throughout Sunday, Feb. 4.

Environment Canada says tonight's low in Winnipeg city limits could drop to -39 C.

The Westman area is expected to get hit the worst, with gusty winds off of the Riding and Duck mountains bringing local blowing snow to the area.

Extreme wind chills will cease by noon tomorrow, according to Environment Canada. However, below normal temperatures are expected to stick around throughout next week.

Environment Canad is once again reminding people of the risks of exposure to extreme cold and says children, older adults, people will chronic illnesses, people working or excising outdoors and those without proper shelter are most vulnerable.
