No one was injured after a fire ripped through a temporary encampment along a Winnipeg riverbank.

The blaze broke out at around 12:23 a.m. on Tuesday along the riverbank near Assiniboine Avenue.

When crews arrived at the scene, they found several tents engulfed in flames and smoke. All occupants of the tents safely self-evacuated before the arrival of crews, and no injuries were reported.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says that temporary encampments are at a heightened risk for fires, with most shelters only having one way in and out. In most cases, they say they are assembled using flammable materials which burn quickly.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
