The Downtown Winnipeg Biz is embracing winter in all its wonder by displaying ice sculptures for people to enjoy.

"We know Winnipeg is a winter city," says Saz Massey, the Marketing and Communications Coordinator with Downtown Winnipeg Biz. "Every year the Downtown Winnipeg Biz in the winter comes up with something to bring a little joy to downtown, and this year is Winter Wanderland."

They have partnered with Sputnik Architecture and have placed big and intricate ice sculptures around the downtown area.

"This is the first year we've done ice sculptures," says Massey. "Last year we did snowfa's which is sofa's sculpted out of snow."

There are 11 ice sculptures in six different locations.

"We've got sculptures at Bonnycastle Park, Union Centre, Millenium Library, True North Square, Alt Hotel, and the Burton Cummings Theatre."

Some of the sculptures have a coloured light underneath to illuminate it during the evening and overnight. The sculpture at the Burton Cummings Theatre is a detailed piano made of ice, and they have music playing near it as well.

"The ice sculptures are all carved by local Manitoba artists using ice that was harvested at the Red River. The ice is crystal clear and beautiful."

There is a bald eagle sculpture as well as an octopus reading a book carved out of ice right outside of the Millenium Library.

"If you look really closely, the artist Jodine Leigh actually got words, a title of the book carved into the book."

The Downtown Winnipeg Biz is also offering a scavenger hunt for locals of the sculptures and pink toques.

"Winter Wanderland not only has sculptures but we've hidden pink toques of six downtown businesses. We've got clues on our website. If you find one toque that gives you an entry to win one of four $25 downtown Winnipeg giftcards. If you find all six, you're entered to win a $100 gift card."
