This Saturday, December 2nd at 7:00pm at Westworth United Church, the Esprit Singers will be presenting a concert called “And Suddenly.”

For those unfamiliar with the Esprit Singers, they are Manitoba’s premiere women’s choir. They have performed in Iceland to rave reviews and have performed with some of Winnipeg’s best musicians. They have also commissioned new works and arrangements from such composers as Ron Paley, David Scott, Glenn Sutherland and Neil Weisensel

The concert “And Suddenly” will feature Christmas Music, Hebrew Psalms settings and some Gospel and R&B selections. Joining the Esprit Singers will be soprano soloist Elena Howard-Scott and a small group of outstanding instrumentalists.

The name of the concert comes from the name of a piece by the American composer Michael Engelhardt called “And Suddenly.” As Esprit’s Artistic Director Valdine Anderson explains, “He [Engelhardt] describes his music as a mixture of gospel and soul… and ancient and future…and I love that because it’s truly classical, but it’s got a little bit of gospel and pop to it as well. There is really something for everybody in it. It is really fun!”

The Esprit Singers will also be welcoming to the stage the fantastic soprano soloist Elena Howard-Scott. She will be performing music of Handel with the choir and also an arrangement of the Carol “Mary did You know.”

Also joining the choir will be a number of extra musicians. They will be joined by a percussion quartet consisting of Cameron Denby, Nathan Gibbens, Sage Helgason-Stoyanowski, and Steven Howes as well as Assistant Professor of Jazz Bass at the Desautels Faculty of Music Karl Kohut. And as always the Esprit Singers will be joined by their long time, super-talented accompanist Rachel Dyck.

“And Suddenly” as presented by the Esprit Singers on Saturday, December 2nd at 7:00pm at Westworth United Church is sure to be a slice of heaven…with the voices of Esprit serving as the angels. One of the finest female choirs in the country performing for this holiday season; there is surely nothing better. This is a marvelous way to stay warm and bask in the warmth of the holiday season.
