If you’ve ever thought about adopting a furry friend, now would be a good time.

Due to a spike in kittens, puppies and older cats taken in by the Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS), the shelter is lowering adoption fees with a number of special promotions.

Effective immediately and throughout July, cats over six months can be adopted for free to $20, kittens can be adopted for $100, or two kittens can be adopted for $179.

WHS Communications Coordinator Kyle Jahns says one kitten is normally $179, so you can get two for one.

“We see this a few times a year with kittens being born,” said Jahns. “Once the weather heats up the cats start exploring, having kittens and then those kittens end up stray or not being wanted and they end up at our door.”

Jahns says the longest they typically run an adoption promotion is one or two weeks, so running one for over a month is something new for the WHS.

“It’s so important for us to be able to find these pets homes,” he said. “In order for us to take more animals in and operate we need to make room for them to make sure they get the care they need.”

Jahns estimates they will take in around 600 cats within the next month.

“It’s critical for our strategic goals to be able to find more homes for more cats,” he said.

In addition to the promotion on cats and kittens, adoption fees for puppies have been lowered to $99 from June 24-30. Puppies normally go for around $280 to $300, according to Jahns.

Jahns says he’s hopeful this promotion will help find more homes for more pets.

“We’re waiting to see how the community reacts,” he said. “Hopefully they’ll come to us when they want to add a forever friend.”
