Winnipeg residents can expect City employees at their front door for the annual water meter reading program beginning on May 1.

To identify meter readers, the City has announced they will be wearing facemasks, and employee uniforms with the City of Winnipeg logo and will be carrying a hand-held device. They will also present photo identification before entering a residence, although homeowners are being told to ask for identification before allowing them inside.

Meter readers will not enter a home if one of the occupants is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, and will only knock on the front and side doors of a residence. Never a back door. Residents are also being asked to ensure all dogs must be secure in another room or kennel before allowing the reader into the home.

City employees will only be visiting homes starting May 1 on weekdays from 9 a.m. to dusk and will continue until September 1.

Homeowners are also being asked to ensure easy access to their water meter for the readers.

The City requires at least one accurate meter reading per year from each household. If a homeowner isn’t at home at the time of the visit, a meter reading card will be left with instructions on how to provide an accurate meter reading by phone or online at winnipeg.ca/meterreading.

Residents can also contact the Utility Billing Centre by phone at 204-986-2455 or by email at utilitybill@winnipeg.ca.
