A riverbank stabilization project in south St. Boniface is now complete.

The project on Lyndale Drive was finished at $5-million, under the $6.2-million dollar budget. Both the province and the city contributed funds.

St. Boniface councillor Matt Allard said at a press conference at the site yesterday the completion of the project puts down another piece of what he called the St. Boniface riverfront puzzle.

Allard called the active transportation features incorporated in the project beautiful and said the stabilization had to be done because residents' water and sewer were on the line.

"Lyndale Drive forms a portion of the city's primary diking system to defend against flooding along the Red River," new municipal relations minister Jeff Wharton said during the press conference.

The riverbank stabilization project involved removing an old timber retaining wall, installing rockfill columns, roadway re-alignment, a limestone terrace, and re-vegetation, as well as a new granular trail with seating.

A ribbon-cutting was held yesterday to officially open the trail.
