A man is recovering in hospital after being assaulted in a random attack in the city's West End.

At around 1 a.m. on Friday, August 4, officers were called to the area of Beverley Street and Wellington Avenue after receiving several calls about a distressed male in the area.

Tactical Support Team members attended and located a 29-year-old man suffering from numerous injuries. The victim was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable. The suspect fled before police arrived.

With the assistance of Central District General Patrol officers, TST members located the suspect near Home Street and Notre Dame Avenue and placed him under arrest without incident. He was transported to hospital and treated for a minor upper-body injury before being conveyed to police headquarters for processing.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and determined the suspect approached the victim and asked for a cigarette. Unprovoked, the suspect stabbed the victim, causing multiple injuries, before fleeing the area.

The victim and suspect were previously unknown to one another, and investigators believe the incident to be random.

24-year-old Christopher Wyatt James Sumner is charged with aggravated assault and remains in custody.

The Major Crimes Unit continues the investigation. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
