Smokers will have less places they're allowed to light up in Winnipeg by the start of next week.

The City of Winnipeg has issued a notice saying smoking on outdoor patios and restaurants and bars will be banned as of April 1st.

The city says council approved the by-law amendments after extensive public engagement that demonstrated clear public support for the move.

Fines for smokers and business owners who contravene the patio-smoking ban can be up to $200 for a patron and $400 for a business operator.
