Pan Am Place is setting lofty goals for its second annual "Bold in the Cold" sleep out.

Volunteers from Pan Am Place and anyone else who wants to join will sleep outdoors for a night in Old Market Square in Winnipeg's Exchange District.

Pan Am Place president Harry Black says last year they raised approximately $22,000 with 15 people sleeping out.

This year they're hoping they can get 100 people out to raise $100,000.

"I'll take that brave stance that I believe we will be successful with this event," Black says. "It's something our residents have done many nights prior to joining Pan Am Place. They're homeless, young men who have no housing and sleep outdoors so we want to do a couple of things with this but mostly we want to raise awareness that a lot of people go through this every night in our city."

Pan Am Place is a homeless shelter that operates on a merit-based model. It helps young, homeless men apply for jobs, get back into school and work on their physical well-being, on the condition they spend time volunteering and training three times a week at Pan Am Boxing Club.

Black says they have approximately 70 volunteers between Pan Am Place and Pan Am Boxing Club and he's hopeful many, if not all of them, will join the sleep out.

If you do plan on attending, Black cautions that the sleep out does not pull any punches.

"There's no tents or any shelter," Black said. "It's like you would expect. On the ground, on cardboard at best and maybe a blanket."

The sleep out is set to take place from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on February 16 and 17, 2018.

Black says the money will go towards upgrading the facilities and programs Pan Am Place offers.
