Update: The Perimeter Highway is now open as of 6 a.m.

It used to be a rare move that many could not even remember happening, but now the Perimeter Highway has been closed for the 10th time this winter driving season.

Several highways in western Manitoba had been closed throughout the weekend, while the eastern half of the province escaped the worst of the conditions until Sunday morning. Rain changed to snow and ice pellets and winds intensified throughout the day.

The RCMP made the decision to close the Perimeter Highway on Sunday evening due to deteriorating conditions. As of 5 a.m. Monday it was still closed with no word on when it might reopen.

While all other highways are open in southern Manitoba as of 5 a.m. several are in poor shape. Rain turned to snow on Sunday, and dropping temperatures have left a slushy and icy mess on many roadways in the City of Winnipeg and on highways throughout the region.
