Despite the freezing temperatures, a family shop was the hot spot in Winnipeg Thursday.

Tables were filled with reminders of the old country like borscht and perogies as Ukrainians, Russians, and others celebrate the nativity on Thursday evening in part thanks to Perogy Planet.

"It's been great actually, a nice little bump after Christmas too," owner Rob Naleway says. "And surprising due to the cold weather that the people are still coming."

Hundreds of dozens of perogies have made their way out of Perogy Planet's doors and into the homes of Winnipeggers all day Thursday.  Naleway says they were prepared and was surprised did not sell out.

"We have four stores and are about to open out fifth, so it doesn't take a lot to sell a lot of perogies."

Potato onion, garlic and dill, potato and cheddar, and sauerkraut perogies were by far the most popular, but Naleway says cabbage rolls have also been flying off of the shelves.

Perogies and cabbage rolls "most definitely are" part of the Naleway family's own Ukrainian Christmas.

Naleway is a second-generation Canadian Ukrainian; grandmother began making and selling perogies in 1942. The family business evolved from a restaurant to catering in the 1960s.

"In the 1980s, my dad got into the perogy business at a grocery store level and then he sold that business in the 1990s. I took over the catering business in the 200s and we just started Perogy Planet in the 2010s."
