Winnipeggers looking to help a good cause and find new material to read or listen to over the summer are encouraged to stop by St. Vital Centre this weekend.

The Children's Hospital Book Market will be set up in the busy mall on Saturday, for a one-day, pop-up event.

"It's a wonderful event that brings together the book lovers in our community, and this is an important space for improving child health," said Stefano Grande, president and CEO of the Children's Hospital Foundation. "Through the book markets, we can raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to support important programs like child life programs."

Grande says the Child Life programming provides comfort for kids and their families in hospital and includes music therapy, the library program, CHTV (the hospital’s closed-circuit television station with content just for kids) and a playroom with toys, games, crafts and a mini hospital where kids can play out their experiences with treatments and procedures.

"It's the simple things like buying a book, making a $5-a-month donation, and all of a sudden you have tens of thousands of people that do that," said Grande. "That creates transformational change sustained by one book at a time."

To make the event possible, Grande says they use the help of more than 400 volunteers.

"Without the generosity of those people, without the time and the love for what they do in supporting sick and injured kids, this would not be possible."

The Children's Hospital Book Market summer pop-up will happen Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Vital Centre.
