Portage RCMP have started an investigation into drug trafficking after a traffic incident led them to find drugs and drug paraphernalia.

A week ago, on October 4, at around 7:30 p.m., a Portage la Prairie RCMP officer was on patrol when a dirt bike was seen operating at a high rate of speed. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver took off. Due to the high rate of speed, the officer decided not to pursue the suspect.

The officer could still see the dirt bike ahead on the road when the driver began to cross the train tracks, and the bike toppled onto its side. The rider dropped his backpack and fled on foot.

The officer was able to retrieve the backpack, as well as a large knife and a set of brass knuckles. Inside the backpack, police found cocaine as well as drug trafficking paraphernalia.
