A Winnipeg man is facing charges after causing a disturbance on a Via Rail train.

At around 12:40 a.m. on Friday, July 28, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report from Via Rail Canada Police that a man was being violent and causing a disturbance on one of their trains.

The train stopped in Portage la Prairie where officers met up with Via Rail employees. Officers discovered that the suspect had been acting aggressively towards staff, had broken a window and stolen a cell phone from another passenger. Before officers arrived at the scene, the suspect grabbed a suitcase and walked off the train.

RCMP officers were able to locate the suspect, a 35-year-old man from Winnipeg, a short distance away. He was arrested and taken into police custody without injury.

His suitcase and the stolen cell phone were not located. No injuries were reported.

The suspect was released later that morning for a court appearance scheduled for October 17, 2023, in Portage la Prairie where he will face charges of Theft Under $5000 and Mischief x2.

Portage la Prairie RCMP continue to investigate.
