The union representing Winnipeg Police Service officers is calling on Police Chief Danny Smyth to tackle an increase in violent crime.
Winnipeg Police Association President Moe Sabourin says attacks on innocent people appear to be more common.
He pointed to several recent incidents, including one on Canada Day, when two Ukrainian refugees were attacked at The Forks.
As reported on June 29 at around 12:30 a.m., the WPS responded to the report of a stabbing outside the Forks Market.
Officers located three adult victims in their twenties. Two adult males had been stabbed, transported to hospital in critical condition, and later upgraded to stable condition. The female victim was not stabbed but treated for minor injuries.
With the assistance of the Tactical Support Team, six suspects in the area were taken into custody (four youths and two adults).
As of July 7, three teenagers were charged for the violent crime.
A 15-year-old female is facing charges of Possess Weapon and Carry a Concealed Weapon. A second15-year-old female is facing charges of Assault, Possess Weapon, Carry a Concealed Weapon and Breach of Court Order. An 18-year-old male is facing the charge of Assault Weapon x 2.
Smyth has called a news conference for this afternoon to address the problem.
