The Manitoba RCMP continually assessed highway conditions overnight and continues to monitor the situation morning. As it turns out, anticipated widespread highway closures across southern Manitoba were not required. At this time, Highway 75 from Morris to the Canada/U.S. border, and Highway 1 from Elie to Austin are officially closed.

RCMP say Highway conditions continue to deteriorate with more official closures possible throughout the day.

The Manitoba RCMP says all major highways in southern Manitoba will be closed this evening as the anticipated storm moves into the province.

"In anticipation of the upcoming storm, Manitoba RCMP has decided to close all major highways in southern Manitoba around midnight tonight or when it begins to snow," the RCMP says in a release. They sent out the notice just after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12.

Earlier on Tuesday, the RCMP had sent out a release urging motorists to not make plans for travel for Wednesday, Thursday, and possibly Friday. They reiterated that message on Tuesday night, saying that "travel is strongly discouraged and that alternate plans should be arranged."

For those who do decide to travel, the RCMP warns that first responders may not be able to get to those in need of assistance in case of emergencies.

A Colorado low has already severely impacted North Dakota with a majority of highways in the state closed as of Tuesday evening. The storm is expected to leave anywhere from 30 to 50 cm of snow in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario before finally pushing further east on Friday.
