Entering its second decade, the Rosamunde Summer Music Academy brings international calibre mentoring and instruction as one of Canada’s foremost summer programs for string players.

After pivoting to online learning last year, the academy stays digital in 2021 drawing an international crop of guest instructors and participants over 5 days.

“This year we actually have a student who is Zooming in from Germany,” says Rosamunde Artistic Director Elation Pauls. “We also have a student who is Zooming in from Brazil.” In addition to local players, Rosamunde also welcomes students in Toronto, Edmonton, Redcliff, Morden and Winkler. “It’s kind of neat to have this more international group able to meet online and able to create a community of string players despite the distance and despite the pandemic.”

The faculty boasts some of the city’s top string players with internationally renowned guest instructors including Montreal Symphony Orchestra’s Concertmaster Andrew Wan and principal cellist Brian Manker, Philadelphia Orchestra’s Concertmaster David Kim and first associate Juliette Kang, principal cellist of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra Julie Albers and outstanding emerging cellist Brannon Cho.

Given the challenges of online learning for younger musicians, the Mini-Rosies program (ages 7-12) was cancelled this year though there are still three other programs including the Core program (ages 10-24), adult amateur ensemble Rosamundiade, and a new pre-professional program this year designed to help prepare students for future orchestral auditions.

“Of course our faculty sits on panels for auditions regularly,” explains Pauls. “I think they’ll really receive some invaluable instruction.”

Rosamunde also presents two concerts in a series titled “Healing Balm” on Tuesday, August 24 and Thursday, August 26.

The first features Pauls collaborating with Indigenous drummer and singer Cory Campbell in a work called “Balm Diggity”. The concert also features music by Iran Habibi, Rebekah Cummings, Gideon Klein and Florence Price.

The "Healing Balm" series features some of Winnipeg’s most in-demand chamber musicians plus another guest performer — and Rosamunde alum — David Liam Roberts. The rising star has made a name for himself as one of the “ones to watch” in the classical music scene; most recently being named first prize winner of the $25,000 Canada Council for the Arts Michael Measures Award.

“He just sounds so great and I can’t wait to have him perform!”

Both concerts take place at Fort Garry Mennonite Brethren Church and are open to fully vaccinated attendees. There will also be a live-stream available to view online. Tickets are $25
