For approximately the next month and a half, traffic will be delayed at the Manitoba-Ontario border due to rock blasting.

Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI) advises the public that beginning on June 12, motorists driving down the Trans Canada Highway, near the eastern provincial border will experience significant delays.

The rock blasting that is to occur for the next four to six weeks is part of the preliminary work underway to twin a 700-metre section of the highway closest to the Manitoba-Ontario border to align with the neighbouring province's new four-lane highway.

Because of this, traffic will be stopped for approximately 15 minutes for each blast. This will depend on site-specific conditions and traffic volumes, but motorists can expect delays.

The Trans-Canada Highway twinning project is one of the major capital projects detailed in the recently released 2023 Multi-year Infrastructure Investment Strategy. The strategy can be viewed online at www.gov.mb.ca/mit/myhis/index.html.
