Winnipeg drivers are being reminded to take their foot off the gas Friday morning as they go through school zones.

While most students won't be back in the classroom until Wednesday or Thursday next week, school zone speed limits go into effect on September 1, each year.

These zones have a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h and are usually found on streets that border a private or public school which includes grade six or lower and is not a regional street.

Signage includes yellow reduced speed ahead signs, and then signs that mark both the beginning and end of the reduced speed zones.

Many other communities throughout the province also have reduced speed zones near schools, with some in effect all year round. Winnipeg's school zone speed limit is in effect Mondays through Fridays from September 1 through June 30.
