A winter storm continues to plague the region, with several highways closed due to poor driving conditions.

Manitoba Infrastructure sent out a notice that the following highways are closed as of 2:18 p.m.:

  • Highway 3, from Highway 14 to south junction of Highway 34
  • Highway 14, from Highway 3 to Highway 75
  • Highway 34, from Highway 3 to Highway 2

The eastbound lanes of Highway 1 were also closed earlier this afternoon east of Portage la Prairie due to a collision. They have since reopened one lane from Road 19 W to Road 23 W. However, other highways that are open are still covered in ice and snow, making for treacherous driving conditions.

Snow and high winds are expected to continue throughout the afternoon and overnight, with blowing snow in outlying areas early this evening. The region can expect to see 2 to 4 cm of snow tonight, with winds coming from the north at 40 km/h, gusting to 60.

Despite the poor conditions, there is hope on the horizon as conditions are expected to improve tomorrow. In the meantime, authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel if possible.

The situation will continue to be monitored, with updates provided on-air and on this story as more information becomes available.
