A pair of boaters are thankful to be on solid ground after becoming stranded over the weekend.

On September 30, at around 5:30 p.m., Selkirk RCMP received a report of a stranded boat on Hardmans Lakes, located on the south shore of Lake Winnipeg.

Police say the boaters, 81 and 59 years old, were out fishing when their boat ran aground on a sand dune. The pair were unable to free themselves and called for help. The boaters were able to say they were north of the Netley boat launch before their cell phone died.

RCMP quickly responded, sending out two boats, one from the Selkirk RCMP Detachment and the other from the RCMP Marine Unit.

The Matlock Fire Department also joined in the search, sending out additional boats and volunteers to help.

After six hours of searching, the stranded boaters were located and safely brought back to shore.
