Tonight (Fri Feb 06) the final orchestra concert of the Winnipeg New Music Festival closes with John Luther Adams's monumental 'Become Ocean'. This is a work that will truly transform the listener. New Yorker Magazine writer and author Alex Ross calls it 'The loveliest apocalypse in musical history'. Showtime is 8:00 PM at the Centennial Concert Hall.

 

 

Become Ocean is nominated for three Grammys this weekend. Best Engineered Classical Album, Classical Producer of the Year and Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Good luck to all involved!

 

Saturday night (Feb 07) transformations continue at the Centennial Concert Hall but this time of the fairy tale kind. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet welcomes Canada's Ballet Jörgen to the city who are performing Cinderella with music by Sergei Prokofiev. Showtime is 7:30 PM and tickets are almost sold out! Also on Saturday night (Feb 07), Winnipeg's International Recital & Chamber Music Concert Series, Virtuosi presents Germany's Fauré Quartett performing what else? Fauré's piano quartet in C minor, Op 15. Also on the program is Brahms Piano Quartet in G minor Op 25. Show time is 8:00 PM at the University of Winnipeg's Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall. This is also your last chance to catch Prairie Theatre Exchange's Life, Death & The Blues. Created and performed by Canadian actor and Maple Blues Award- winner Raoul Bhaneja, this show is a new concert/theatre hybrid that explores the power, passion and meaning of The Blues with the help of his band The Big Time and JUNO award winning R&B artist Divine Brown. There are 4 more performances, tonight and tomorrow night at 8:00 PM plus two matinee performances Saturday at 3:00 and Sunday at 1:30 PM.  Watch a scene from the show here.
