This week, Winnipeg audiences can look forward to the new season, ushered in by the Regimental Band of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in their annual spring concert.

“Everyone always wants to celebrate spring – especially after the winter we’ve had,” says Master Corporal Erin Dunsmore.

The concert also salutes musically the new commander-in-chief, His Majesty King Charles III, recognizing the special relationship that the Canadian military has had with the monarchy, explains Dunsmore.

“We’re highlighting that with pieces that we’re playing on our program such as Ten Provinces and the Folk Song Suite... which honour that relationship,” she says.

Under the musical directorship of Captain Ryan Wehrle, the band currently consists of 34 players – mostly made up of serving members and augmented by a few civilian players – explains Master Corporal Chris Budlong.

“The number is always in flux,” he says, citing retirements and changes in players’ lives.

Taking place at St. John’s Anglican Church (135 Anderson Ave.), the concert is free to the public, though there will be a silver collection in support of Home for Heroes.

The Regimental Band of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles presents their spring concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 13.
