A rain and thunderstorm system will be moving across the province this afternoon into evening, starting in the Brandon area of Manitoba.

"There's a low-pressure system in North Dakota that's going to slowly push Northeast into the region. For the Winnipeg region, most of the show for you isn't going to be until the late evening and into the overnight, persisting into the early morning as well," says Justin Shelley, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

Rain and strong winds are likely to accompany this particular system.

"It is a relatively warm air mass, which creates favourable conditions for the severe thunderstorms to occur," he says.

The southwest near Brandon will experience this system first, and then it will move across the province until it goes over top of Winnipeg and then move toward the Kenora area.

"You want to secure those loose objects that you might have flying around."
