It's now possible to take a tour of Winnipeg from anywhere in the world.

The WinnipegVR app has been released; it allows users to explore various parts of the city in virtual reality.

It's made by Bit Space Development, an interactive digital media company based in Winnipeg. Founder Dan Blair says virtual reality allows for immersive stories.

"We want to attract businesses, investors, and tourists to look at Winnipeg and see what kind of business ecosystem we have here, and to take a look at Winnipeg for potentially either moving their business here one day or just visiting."

The app was developed in partnership with the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce. Blair says it's available on Android and iOS, and it uses Google Cardboard.

It's starting off with a dozen locales people can visit, including Investors Group Field. Blair says there's a few really cool spots.

"Because we've produced this virtual tour with the businesses involved, we've specifically asked them, 'What are some really cool places that you can take us that the average person can't go?' So a good example (is) the centre of Investors Group Field. Not a lot of people get to stand out there. Another really cool location is with the Royal Canadian Aviation Museum. We got to go into their workshop, so when you take the virtual tour in our app, you can see where they're restoring planes that aren't even on display yet."

Blair says his company is looking at expanding the idea to other communities, as well as opening it up to all Winnipeg Chamber members and all Winnipeg businesses. He says they're working on a web browser version as well.
