Hundreds of truckers are getting ready to join together this weekend, raising money for a worthy cause while racking up the miles.

The annual 'Truck Ride for Special Olympics' takes place this Saturday (Sep. 9), beginning at 7:30 a.m. with a breakfast at the Grande Point Community Centre (561Bernat Road).

The trucks get rolling down the highway at 11 a.m. and will head north on Hwy 59 to the Perimeter Highway. The ride then will head east on the Perimeter and will complete one lap of the highway.

Manitoba Infrastructure sent out a notice on Friday urging motorists to be aware and plan accordingly. "Motorists may experience traffic delays along this route as the truck ride passes," the notice says.

Funds go to Special Olympics Manitoba. "Each year the Truck Ride for Special Olympics brings together hundreds of amazing truckers and trucking companies from across the province," the organization's website says, "to celebrate the accomplishments of Special Olympics athletes and raise much needed funds to keep the wheels turning on the year-round programming that allows them to succeed.

"The Truck Ride for Special Olympics is one of the signature events hosted by the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR). The LETR is the largest public awareness and grassroots fundraising organization for Special Olympics globally. The LETR hold a number of year-round fundraising and awareness events in communities across Canada.
