Winnipeg police are searching for a suspect after an off-duty officer was attacked over the weekend.

Police say the officer was walking in the area of St. Mary Avenue and Donald Street at around 7 a.m. on Saturday when they were approached by two male suspects, one of whom attempted to assault the officer. The suspects quickly fled, and the officer contacted police dispatch for help.

While waiting for assistance, a third suspect, armed with a machete, approached the officer and demanded the return of property left behind by the first two suspects. The officer denied his request, and the suspect fled on a bicycle.

Officers quickly located one of the first suspects in the 300 block of St. Mary Avenue. The third suspect was found in the 300 block of Cumberland Avenue. The discarded machete was also recovered nearby and seized as evidence.

The officer suffered no injuries as a result of the assaults.

A 33-year-old male and a 27-year-old male from Winnipeg are facing Assault Peace Officer charges. They were detained in custody.

The Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.
