The holiday season is wrapping up, and the City of Winnipeg is encouraging Winnipeggers to recycle their real Christmas trees.

From now until January 31, trees can be dropped off at any of the nine depots across Winnipeg.

Before dropping off a tree, all plastic tree bags, tinsel, lights, decorations and tree stands must be removed. The city is also asking Winnipeggers not to leave plastic bags or garbage at the drop-off locations.

The recycled trees will be turned into mulch and wood chips, which will be available for free to the public starting in early January.

Trees can also be dropped off year-round for free at the 4R Winnipeg depots during regular hours of operation.

Since the program started 31 years ago, over 412,800 trees have been recycled, which has diverted more than 1,879 tonnes of material from the landfill.
