Amazon is looking for a city for its second North American headquarters, and Winnipeg wants to put its name in, although it doesn't meet the criteria set out by the company.

Within the specs, Amazon says it wants a city with more than 1-million people. Winnipeg's population is somewhere above 727,000.

Mayor Brian Bowman told reporters today Winnipeg will be working with the province to try to ensure it has as good a shot as any city.

"I'm looking forward to being part of those discussions. I'm also mindful that, you know, as Winnipeg grows, Winnipeg is a city that can compete against other cities. Whether or not we'll be successful on different bids depends on each bid and what we're able to do with the province, and depending on the financial and the business needs of respective companies."

Channeling Wayne Gretzky, Bowman said "you miss 100 per cent of the shots you don't take."

Premier Brian Pallister has said he wants a "Team Manitoba" approach to the bid.

Cities have until October 19th to apply. Amazon says it will make its decision next year.
