Winnipeg winter fun for everyone

Winnipeg families don't need to leave the perimeter to have a ton of fun this winter, both inside and outdoors.

"I think a lot of Manitobans are embracing the idea of getting outside more in winter," says Jillian Recksiedler, the Senior Content Specialist with Travel Manitoba in Winnipeg. "Perhaps this winter people aren't going to be travelling as far, wanting to stay close to home."

Travel Manitoba just released their Winter Explore Guide which people can browse online or at their building at the Forks. 

Outdoor Fun

"I have my personal favourites. I love the Forks and what they do with the river trail is just incredible. It makes Winterpeg as we like to call it, stand tall on the Canadian stage for celebrating winter."

The Forks recently released the winners of the warming hut designs which will be made shortly. The trail often opens up in January once the ice on the river is thick enough. Once open, the trail hosts many warming huts that also act as pieces of art. 

"Fort Whyte Alive is a wonderland, a playground for all seasons. My favourite season to go there is winter. Their toboggan run is legendary so take time to zip down that. They always do an amazing job of scheduling really cool outdoor events like trying out ice fishing for a day."

They also rent out winter equipment to enjoy their trails with, like snowshoes and fat bikes. 

"Cross-country skiing is becoming more and more popular and becoming more accessible. One of my favourite stops right in Winnipeg is the Windsor Park Nordic Ski Centre, which is just in St.Boniface along the Seine River. They provide all of the gear and then you have a pass to their groomed ski areas."

Indoor Fun

For individuals and families who would prefer to stay inside when the temperatures drop, there are a host of activities to check out. 

"Our museums are world-class in Winnipeg, absolutely top-notch. It's a great way to bring your kids and make a day of it."

The Manitoba Museum recently reopened their Science Gallery and offer upgrades to other previous galleries. They are offering family fun with Pajama Days during the Christmas break. 

"If you haven't been, Qaumajuq, the Inuit art centre at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Winter is a great season to head indoors and enjoy that. It's very family friendly and fascinating. They have a brand new gallery art shop which is a great place to buy upcoming gifts for the holiday season."

Recksiedler mentions that the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is another option. 

"What a spectacular building. Architecturally but also the contents are so moving. There's tons of room for social distancing. Take your time as it's a great way to spend an afternoon in Winnipeg."
