A woman is recovering after a random attack in west Winnipeg.

Shortly after 10 p.m. on Sunday, the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 3200 block of Portage Avenue for the report of a woman who had been assaulted.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found an unconscious 32-year-old woman suffering from an upper-body injury. She was transported to hospital in stable condition.

The suspect fled the scene and boarded a bus before police arrived.

With help from Winnipeg Transit, officers were able to locate the suspect near Portage Avenue and Rouge Road and placed her under arrest without incident.

Police say the suspect approached the victim on Portage Avenue and struck her in the upper body with what is believed to be road debris, knocking her unconscious.

The suspect then stole the victim's property before boarding a transit bus and fleeing the scene.

Officers also learned the suspect had damaged a bus shelter at Portage Avenue and Rouge Road shortly before her arrest.

The suspect and the victim were not previously known to one another, and investigators believe the assault was random and unprovoked.

A 27-year-old Winnipeg woman has been charged with robbery and mischief over $5000. She remains in custody.
