Each year Manitoba’s most extraordinary women are honoured with the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg’s Women of Distinction Awards. We thought it would be great to meet the women nominated in the Arts, Culture and Heritage category.* Missed Sarah Jo's interview with Darlene? Watch the video here!

Nominated by Aynsley Cockshott, Darlene is a writer, visionary, and teacher who has been at the forefront of changing the way the world looks at Inuit art and culture. During her tenure with the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Darlene mounted more than 80 exhibitions and 20 exhibition catalogues featuring Inuit art and artists. In 2012, Darlene received an honorary doctorate from the University of Manitoba for her work with indigenous art and culture. She has been described as an inspiring and engaging teacher and has featured the work of many Inuit women carvers, which serves as an inspiration for other women carvers in the tradition.
