RCMP arrest truck driver 9 months after mother, daughter killed near Altona
A 25-year-old semi truck driver has been arrested after a Canada-Wide Warrant was issued following a collision that claimed the lives of a mother and daughter near Altona last year. At approximately 8:50 a.m. on August 21, Navjeet Singh was arrested by Peel Regional Police and Canada Border Services Agency at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. Singh had originally arrived in Canada on an Ethiopian Airlines flight following a 9-month Canada-wide Warrant for his Arrest. In November 2024, Pembina Valley RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Provincial Road 201 and Provincial Road 306 near Altona. The semi was travelling eastbound and failed to stop at the intersection at Provincial Road 306 and collided with a southbound SUV. The 35-year-old female SUV driver was pronounced deceased on scene and her eight-year-old daughter later died at hospital. The 25-year-old Singh was charged on November 20, 2024 with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death x2 as well as Obstructing a Peace Officer and issued a Canada-wide Warrant of Arrest. Singh will be escorted back to Manitoba by RCMP in the coming days and remanded in custody. “This investigation was a combined effort and could not have been accomplished without the hard work of multiple policing organizations,” said Pembina Valley RCMP Corporal Jamie Sokolosky in a news release. “From the CBSA to Peel Regional Police, and Manitoba Motor Carrier Enforcement – their assistance was vital. This has been an extremely tough time for the family. We thank everyone who put their concerns and comments out there – we all came together to ensure this apprehension was successful.” The investigation continues.
