Tune in Saturday at 9 a.m. for Classic 107’s musical prelude to the WAG-Qaumajuq Home Tour
Saturday Morning on Classic 107: A Musical Salute to Houses, Homes and Dream Spaces This Saturday at 9:00 a.m., Classic 107 is serving up a playlist all about houses and homes. We’re doing it in honour of the WAG-Qaumajuq’s 12th annual Home Tour on Sunday, September 14th — a fundraiser that opens the doors to five remarkable Headingley homes. It’s a chance to explore design, architecture, and inspiration while supporting the arts in Manitoba. What you’ll see on the tour: Every ticket acts like a “passport” to all five homes (view in any order), with a map highlighting homes and rest stops, including the Shelmerdine Garden Centre and Canadian Countertops for refreshments. Homes on this year’s tour include: A 2020 “Sugar Cube Home,” built with insulated concrete forms on all three floors. A contemporary loft‐style house with industrial finishes and a custom mural by local artist Rachel Lancaster, even a vintage truck suspended from the ceiling. A minimalist Scandinavian retreat, with clean lines, outdoor kitchen, and custom pizza oven. A riverside home designed for entertaining, luxurious interiors, and a pool overlooking the Assiniboine River. A mid-century modern home from the 1950s, under major renovation, preserving original design elements, on 36 acres with a winding drive and shuttle. A $50 ticket (available online at wag.ca or in person at Shelmerdine Garden Centre) directly supports WAG-Qaumajuq’s arts initiatives and community programs. The Music at 9:00am: Pieces That Evoke Home Here’s what you’ll hear: 🏡 9:00 – Home Sweet Home – arranged by Justin Holland, performed by Christopher Mallett on guitar A tender arrangement of the 19th-century parlour song that became an anthem for longing and belonging. 🎉 9:04 – Grieg: Wedding Day at Troldhaugen – performed by Leif Ove Andsnes Written to celebrate Grieg’s 25th wedding anniversary, full of joy, bustle, and the warmth of shared domestic life. Grieg’s own home near Bergen was called Troldhaugen, which translates to “Troll Hill.” 🏰 9:11 – Smetana: Vyšehrad from Má vlast – performed by the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta A sweeping tone poem inspired by Prague’s historic Vyšehrad Castle, blending myth, architecture, and national memory — a fortress as “home” for a people. 📬 9:25 – Copland: Letter from Home – performed by the London Symphony Orchestra with Copland conducting Composed during WWII, it captures the tender nostalgia of hearing from loved ones far away, evoking the comfort of home through sound. 🌈 9:36 – Wagner: Entrance of the Gods into Valhalla from Das Rheingold – performed by the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell The gods move into their glittering new abode, Valhalla — a grand, mythical housewarming in music. 👑 9:42 – Arthur Bliss: from the Royal Palaces Suite – performed by the BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gamba Regal and ceremonial, evoking the splendour of Buckingham Palace as both a royal home and national symbol. ✨ 9:49 – Ann Southam: from Glass Houses – arranged for two marimbas, performed by Taktus Minimalist sparkle that feels like sunlight bouncing off glass — playful, contemporary “rooms” in sound. 🔥 9:56 – Hot House – performed by Chick Corea and Gary Burton A jazz standard reimagined, full of improvisational fire — reminding us that “house” can also mean a hot, swinging jam space. Why Music & Home Go Together Homes hold memory, comfort, and identity; music can do the same. Saturday’s playlist explores that overlap — from intimate guitar miniatures to orchestral grandeur. Think of it as a guided “musical home tour” before you set foot in Headingley on Sunday. So brew your coffee, tune in at 9:00 a.m., and let Classic 107 take you on a journey through music about houses, castles, and homes. Then, on Sunday, see how inspiration continues inside the walls of Headingley’s most stunning residences.
