The NDP has held onto its Point Douglas stronghold.

Yesterday's provincial byelection in that constituency goes to Bernadette Smith, who received about 44 per cent of the votes (1,534). The Point Douglas seat has only ever been won by a New Democrat.

Voter turnout was at 32.38 per cent.

Second place went to the Liberals' John Cacayuran, with 1,006 votes. Jodi Moskal of the PCs received 562 votes. There were six candidates in total.

The byelection had to be called after former NDP MLA Kevin Chief vacated his seat late last year.
