Five young Winnipeggers were honoured by Mayor Brian Bowman today.

Bowman presented them with the Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership at a ceremony at City Hall Thursday morning.

The five winners include:

  • Mercedes Sousa – Transcona Collegiate
  • Rie Penner – Glenlawn Collegiate
  • Sophia Partyka – St. Mary’s Academy
  • Linda Muzamuzi – College Louis Riel
  • Betelhem Kassa – Tec Voc

Bowman said he was inspired when reading about all the school events and charitable causes the recipients were involved in.

“These students are incredible and they are examples of why Winnipeggers should be confident in the city’s future,” Bowman said. “I feel extremely confident that the best days are ahead of us because of the young leaders we’re recognizing today and will be recognizing in the future.”

Bowman joked he was happy that none of the recipients were running against him for mayor, saying he was amazed at how active and involved they are in their communities.

“I think they are a lot more engaged than we were when I was in high school,” Bowman said. “We didn’t have the internet or smart phones so we weren’t as connected, but the knowledge and passions our younger Winnipeggers have is incredibly inspiring.”

The scholarships are given out to students who display outstanding dedication to making their community a better place to live by solving community problems, according to a city news release.

Each recipient received $1,000 towards their post-secondary education.
