A new library for River Heights is going to be located northwest of Pan Am Pool, in the Grant Park Campus area.

The location was unveiled today. River Heights-Fort Garry councillor John Orlikow said there are so many benefits to the new location.

"There's going to be enough parking, because these libraries do draw in some parking. The transportation was a big one, the transit -- how it's a good transit location -- and the (active transportation), and also (being located in the) Grant Park (campus), and also the school," he said.

The new facility will be named the Bill & Helen Norrie Library. Bill Norrie was Winnipeg's mayor from 1979 to 1992; his wife Helen worked as a teacher and librarian. Helen spoke at today's unveiling ceremony, saying she was very happy to do so.

"Libraries, particularly ones such as this, that will be close to other amenities such as the swimming pool and the indoor arena, are the heart of our communities. They not only nourish young minds but provide stimulation for persons of all ages," said Helen.

The new library will be 14,000 square feet, and will feature accessible program rooms and multi-use space for community groups, as well as an outdoor reading garden.

"The previous library that we all adore and love... it had some very strong limitations to it," said Orlikow. He said the community has grown and there is a need for a more modern library.

Construction is to start next year. Orlikow said tenders are out now for the design work, and it will be two years before construction is finished.
