Manitoba RCMP says a 77-year-old man is dead after his home was destroyed by a tornado that touched down in the rural community of Alonsa, Man. Friday night.

Sgt. Paul Manaigre said in an emailed statement that the man was found deceased outside of his residence.

Environment Canada has confirmed the twister struck shortly before 9 p.m. after severe storm warnings were issued for the area, which is about 165 km northwest of Winnipeg.

Some people reported seeing tennis ball-sized hail, about six cm in diameter.

A spokesman for Environment Canada says the one home that was torn off its foundation is quote - "just the tip of the iceberg" - given photos on social media suggest multiple structures near Alonsa were damaged.

A crew for the weather agency is heading to the area to conduct a full investigation and try to determine the tornado's intensity.
