Winnipeg paramedics were presented with an honourary street name Monday morning.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) was on hand to unveil the honourary designation of Paramedic Way, a one block portion of St. Mary's Road in front of the former St. Vital Fire Hall.

"We have an Honourary Firefighters Way elsewhere in the city, I wanted to pay respect to the paramedics in the city," said St. Vital Councillor Brian Mayes.

Mayes says he was amazed at the number of paramedics who showed up, which tells him they really appreciate it.

"I was quite touched by them, I think it meant a lot," Mayes said. "I think it's something symbolic."

The location is symbolic as well. The stretch of road goes past the former St. Vital Fire Hall, which housed ambulances for many years. The building has been designated as a heritage building and currently houses the St. Vital Museum.

The one block portion of St. Marry's Road, which runs from St. Anne's Road to Mager Drive, will officially be recognized as Paramedic Way starting Monday and the designation will remain in effect for five years.
