In the heart of the continent, during the coldest months of the year, Winnipeg celebrates new music with a week-long festival featuring local, national and international talent. The 28th Winnipeg New Music Festival (WNMF) takes place from Saturday, January 26th until Friday, February 1st.

This year, the festival begins with a special pre-festival performance at the Pavillion Sub Zero: a custom-designed amphitheater on the Assiniboine River, featuring Norwegian art and multi-instrumentalist Terje Isunget, vocalist Maria Skranes and percussionists from the University of Manitoba performing on freshly crafted ice instruments.

Festival highlights include: Bramwell Tovey, the founding WNMF Music Director returns to lead the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in Harmonielehre - the work featured in the inaugural festival in 1992. The progressive metal instrumentalists Animals As Leaders perform both as soloists (Tuesday, WNMF: 4) and with orchestra (Wednesday, WNMF:5) for the first time. The Grammy-award winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth make their debut in Winnipeg in a concert of their own (Thursday, WMNF:6) and in the festival-closer, Friday, with the WSO performing music of Caroline Shaw. This year's dinguished guest composer is the renowned Latvian writer of music, PÄ“teris Vasks.
