Foreseeable infrastructure repairs at Portage and Main are probing the investment in a new and reimagined look for the nation's windiest intersection.
The City of Winnipeg has announced that the membrane (waterproofing layer) that protects Winnipeg Square from water damage is nearing the end of its lifespan and is due for replacement.
During the replacement, the intersection will need to be excavated entirely, which may cause significant delays to drivers' commutes for a while.
But with this costly investment, arises the opportunity to recreate the public space at Portage and Main. The City is seeking feedback from the public on ideas for how the space could look like, and how it could be enjoyed by people that visit, live or work near this well-known intersection.
There will be two pop-up events in the Downtown area on Wednesday, May 10 and Thursday, May 11, to allow Winnipeggers to voice their visions, learn more about the opportunity, speak with the project team and engage in discussions.
The event on May 10 will be hosted at 201 Portage Ave. from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the one on May 11 will be hosted in Winnipeg Square near Scotiabank from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Residents can also participate in an online survey, available until May 26, 2023.
